Traditional automotive CG is built offline: model, light, render, wait for frames, then composite. For a car launch or brand film that means days or weeks of iteration for every camera angle. Unreal Engine flips that into a real-time workflow. The same environment, lighting, and camera setup can be viewed, adjusted, and output in the moment.
For a CG studio, this is not just a speed gain. It means the art director can sit in the engine with the director and client, changing time of day, materials, and camera moves while the shot is being discussed. The result is a more directed image, not a faster render farm.
A modern car launch rarely happens in one place. The same vehicle needs to appear in a press reveal, a hero film, social cutdowns, and dealership content. Unreal Engine lets the studio build one environment and camera package, then deliver multiple formats from a single real-time scene.
In our Aston Martin AMR25 launch work, the environment was built and optimized in Unreal Engine so it could sit inside the wider launch film. The camera could be reframed, the grade adjusted, and the lighting iterated without sending every version back to a render queue. That flexibility is what fixed race-weekend and launch-date deadlines demand.
Automotive configurators are the clearest use case for Unreal Engine. A single car model can be prepared with swappable paint, trim, wheels, and interior finishes, then rendered in real time across platforms. The same asset that drives a web configurator can be reused for press stills, film backplates, or event installations.
The key is asset discipline. Materials must be built in a way that supports both beauty lighting for marketing and functional lighting for interactive use. Geometry needs to be optimized without losing the surfacing details that sell a premium car. We build car assets as modular hero objects so they can move from film to configurator without being rebuilt.
Unreal Engine's ray-traced reflections and global illumination give automotive surfaces a convincing cinematic finish. For car work, reflections are everything: paint, glass, chrome, and carbon all read through the world reflected in them. Real-time ray tracing lets us place the car in an environment and see those reflections update as the camera moves, rather than waiting for a rendered reflection pass.
We still composite where the project needs it, but the base image is now far closer to final. That reduces rounds and gives the client a true WIP look during reviews, not a grayscale proxy.
Real-time does not mean everything happens inside the engine. For effects like the formula-driven murmuration we created for the Aston Martin Aramco bespoke livery reveal, Houdini is the right tool. The effect is authored in Houdini, then brought into Unreal as a point-cache or Niagara setup so it can be lit and rendered in the same scene as the car.
This hybrid approach: Houdini for simulation, Unreal for rendering, is how we handle effects that need to stay art-directed while still being part of a real-time review.
Unreal Engine is the right choice when the project needs iteration, multiple outputs, or real-time interaction. Car launches, configurators, event installations, and interactive dealer content all benefit from a live pipeline. For purely linear, offline spots where the camera is locked, traditional renderers still have a place. But the gap is closing, and the production advantages of real-time are hard to ignore for automotive brands under launch pressure.
